Is the mark at the base of the Reverse of this coin an Arabic-style mint mark for Heation and Sons, or something else? Whatever it is, it is not referred to on the Catalogue page. My instinct tells me, yes, but instinct does not necessarily translate to fact. Advice please.

 Cheers, AY

It looks like the same symbol appears on N#2452 and N#2454 , and something similar appears on the left side of N#2457 .

Those are the only four Algerian coins identified as produced by Heaton and Sons / The Mint Birmingham Limited.

I don't see anything similar on the other three coins from 1964. Schön says those coins were produced by Kings 1751.

N#2455 N#1751 N#1754

TButhe symbol could also indicate the designer of the coin.

I have the book of Heatons showing every coin they were involved in, struck by Heatons is in many cases not correct as they often supplied only the blanks, sometimes also the dies and sometimes a complete mint with machines dies and blanks and staff from B.ham to help set it up.

For Algeria it shows they produced the first ever coins for the republic of Algeria, 1,2,5 Centime and 1 Dinar, no mintmarks.

Mintage (1 cent) 35,000,000 (2) 50,000,000, (5) 40,000,000, Dinar 15,000,000

Here are close ups of the 3 I own. The 1 Centime is almost completely gone.

Does not appear each denomination is the same.

2 Centimes
5 Centimes

I'm thinking that what you are calling a mintmark is possibly the stylised name of the Arabic designer of the coin. Sometimes Heatons provided a full service of design through to production, however an Arabic coin may require the design to be sent to England for the engravers to work off

Wouldn’t a designers name be the same on all 3 denominations? Since all 3 have the same basic design? I am not convinced it is a mintmark or designers mark. The 2 centimes appears to have a number 12 and the 5 centimes appears to have the number 16. Just how it appears to me.

Whatever the strange marks are they are definitely not Heatons mintmarks, the book also shows examples of every known Heatons mintmark - and they used more than any other mint (16  in total)  but there is nothing like the marks in question. Only 2 are on Arabic coins  ( Morocco) but it's hardly a mintmark when it is the only writing across the entire coin reading in Arabic “struck in England”

Thank you folks! Which is why I *never* rely on instinct, in the first instance. I now know what it is not, for sure.

 Cheers All, AY
